Elizabeth Nathan and Gabriella Pollack , 17-year-Olds- The 17 year old two teenagers, Elizabeth Nathan and Gabriella Pollack have win the Nynex Science and Technology Awards competition in Boston, this week for designing a new reusing syringe.
The invention of a nonreusable syringe to help prevent the spread of AIDS brought two New York City teen-agers top honors in a science and technology competition.
This week, Elizabeth and Gabriella at the Brearley School in Manhattan have beaten more than 450 teams of high school students from New York and New England.
Both teenager will each receive a $15,000 college scholarship and have access to grants for the development of their invention.
Their design would prevent drug addicts from re-using syringes, thereby exposing themselves to the AIDS virus and other blood-borne diseases -- by immobilizing the plunger after it is used.
If the plunger is pulled out again, it simply breaks off.
So the teens and tweens are the minds behind some revolutionary products from household staples to cool niche novelties to an entire method of communicating.
